Soma Double Cross in touring mode

The Soma Double Cross in touring mode.

After the deluge earlier this week, I reconfigured the Soma Double Cross as a fendered kinda-sorta touring bike instead of an unfendered kinda-sorta cyclo-cross bike. Naturally, conditions have been dry and windy ever since, so much so that today I became a pedestrian rather than gnaw on the gentle double-digit zephyrs.

The weather wizards say all this will change over the weekend, but I’ll believe it when I see it. In the meantime, the fenders stay on as a Stooge-like double-finger to the eyes for the gods.

Speaking of the Stooges (nyuk nyuk), the Farrelly brothers’ tribute to Nyukledom opens this weekend. I’ve seen two reviews, one from a man, the other from a woman, both basically going “Awwwww. …” Cute? The Three Stooges? Nawwwww. I think I can wait for the free library DVD on this one.

Right now we’re up to our bowl cuts in “Boardwalk Empire,” which gets off to an awfully slow start for the uninitiated, and “The Wire,” which was just so goddamn motherfuckin’ good that we watchin’ them shits again, yo, a’ight? Maybe this time we won’t need the subtitles.

Sure-fire way to stop the rain is mount up some fenders. We’ll probably start watching DVD’s of Boardwalk Empire once we return to the USA. We’ve watched The Wire a couple of times through and still like the show – tru dat!

When are you folks coming “home?” Someone needs to get a chokehold on Steve King.

I’ll be back in the land of the Big Gulp and Baconator in late July. The wife goes to Greece to hobknob with her fellow philosophical wizards for awhile and comes back in early August. Steve King? I’m hoping redistricting might get rid of him, though rumors are a Democrat with some support might challenge him this go-round. We can only hope.

Surefire way to bring on snow is to take off the snow tires, and bring on rain by taking off the fenders. And vice versa.

Have never seen “The Wire” or “Boardwalk”, but I have seen Dominic West in “The Hour” and Idris Elba in “Luther” and they are terrific.

The Tour of Battenkill is taking place this weekend. I’ll go see the Pros race on Sunday.

Libby, “The Wire” is that rarest of birds — great TV. Great characters, solid writing and acting.

We’ve only watched one “Boardwalk,” the opener, and it was handicapped with the usual exposition, character introductions, yadda yadda yadda. We’re gonna give it another whirl tonight.

Have fun at Battenkill. Don’t forget Amstel Gold — should be streaming live bright and early at http://www.cyclingfans.com.

      • Libby Says:

Yes I want to watch Amstel but don’t know how much I’ll see. Have to travel hour and half to Cambridge and then find a place to park and get to the start at Battenkill. The course eats tires.

Rent “The Hour” – very well done and very enjoyable look at a fictional weekly newshour on the BBC in 1956. Performances, including West, are top notch. Also, Idris Elba is “Luther”, unconventional anti-hero cop (is there any other kind?) in contemporary London.

Thanks for the link and reminder Patrick. I sort of watched the end of Amstel Gold this morning. I always forget that race and it’s newish cracker-jack ending on the Cauberg! Damn that’s a tough final kilometer.

I did a tough 75 miler yesterday with my friend’s bike shop. 4400 miles of climbing…I can’t believe I felt up for a 2 hour spin today with him.
